AAAS/Subaru Book Prize Program Closing

Dear AAAS/Subaru Book Prize Community,

Since 2005, Subaru of America, Inc. and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) have partnered to encourage the writing and publishing of high-quality science books for young readers. We believe that books have the power to foster kids’ natural curiosity in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and can inspire the next generation of scientists. Unfortunately, after nearly two decades, the AAAS/Subaru Book Prize program is closing.

This program has awarded over 75 books and honored more than 100 authors and illustrators. Those numbers don’t include the hundreds of titles we highlighted on the longlists every year, or the number of finalists featured in Science Magazine every December. We are deeply grateful to our volunteer committee of judges who have spent so much time and energy selecting the winners each year. Without them, this award would not have been possible.

Over the years we created more than 200 free STEM resources for students, teachers, and families, including content in Spanish. Educational materials included classroom-ready lessons based on award-winning books, spotlights on STEM professionals, hands-on activities for school or home, blog posts, newsletters, reading recommendations, and afterschool activities. We interviewed authors about the inspirations behind their books and profiled a diverse group of scientists to show kids that there are many types of people doing many types of science. Through the Subaru Loves Learning initiative, we donated over 370,000 books to low-resourced schools across the country.

With the incredible support from Subaru of America, Inc., AAAS was able to recognize amazing science books, and build lasting relationships with authors, illustrators, publishers, educators, scientists, librarians, retailers, schools, families, and students. We look forward to celebrating our accomplishments while continuing to honor the 2024 winners throughout the year, and of course AAAS will continue to advocate for, nurture, and inspire young people’s interest in science.

Thank you for being a part of our community!

Best,
The AAAS/Subaru Book Prize Team
